Till and expenses: your salon's money on one screen

When you lock up and ask "how did we do today?", the answer isn't just what's in the cash drawer. Card payments, bank transfers and the bits you paid out during the day all count. Makastam's till sorts every payment by method, keeps expenses in categories and puts the whole day on one page at closing time.

Payments are split by method

Every payment taken when a ticket closes is recorded as cash, card or bank transfer; with a split payment, each part goes under its own method. Payments clients make towards their tab go on the same list. So at the end of the day you know how much cash should be in the drawer, how much should come through from the card machine and which transfers have arrived. When you count the drawer, the figure to compare it with is already on screen.

Tips have their own line in the till summary and aren't counted as takings. That explains part of any gap between "today's takings" and "what's in the drawer" straight away.

Cash in and cash out by hand

Not every movement of money comes from a ticket. The float you put in the drawer in the morning, cash taken out for milk and coffee, or money taken to the bank are recorded as manual cash in or cash out. Each entry keeps its amount, direction and a note, and they're totalled on separate lines in the period summary.

Expenses by category

Log expenses such as rent, utilities, supplies, wages and advances, tax and stock purchases under their category. At the end of the month you can see where the money went, category by category, and spot which costs are creeping up. When staff commission is paid out, the commission screen creates the expense entry itself and that entry can't be deleted, so the till and what you owe your team always match up.

The end-of-day report

The end-of-day report is your salon's daily scorecard: takings, number of tickets closed, payments by method, cash movements and expenses. It also has a checks section that lists every discount and cancelled ticket, with who did it and the reason they gave, plus any line charged at a different price from your menu. Five minutes on this page each evening saves hours of hunting for receipts at the end of the month.

  1. Check the payments

Look at the cash, card and bank transfer totals, and compare the card total with your card machine's end-of-day report.

  2. Count the cash

Count the drawer and compare it with cash taken, minus cash expenses and cash out.

  3. Look over discounts and cancellations

If something on the list looks odd, read the reason. If you still have questions, have a word in the morning.

  4. Settle up with your team

If you pay commission daily, settle each stylist from the commission screen; the expense is recorded for you.

A daily summary for the owner

On days you're not in the salon, the end-of-day summary still reaches you in the evening by email and in-app notification, and on Telegram too if you've connected it in your profile. Takings, payments and the key numbers arrive in one message. The reports section also has staff takings, service profitability, client reports and retail sales.

Who sees what?

The till, salon takings and expenses are only open to the owner and any manager you give access to; the accountant role can see reports and expenses. Stylists can't open the till or take payments. If you have more than one branch, users assigned to a branch only see that branch's records. More on roles: Staff roles and logins.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if the till and tickets don't match?

Start with the discounts and cancellations in the end-of-day report, then check manual cash movements and cash expenses. A gap usually comes from a purchase nobody logged or a payment recorded under the wrong method.

Do staff payouts show up as expenses?

Yes. When you settle up with a stylist on the commission screen, a payout record and a locked expense entry are created automatically.

How do tips appear in the till?

Tips have their own line in the till summary and aren't counted as takings. How much goes to the stylist is set in their commission rule.

Can my accountant see the till?

The accountant role can see payments, expenses and reports, and export them. You decide who works in which role.
