Staff commission: set the rule once, it adds up daily

Working out who's owed what with a calculator at the end of the month takes hours and usually ends in a debate. In Makastam you set each stylist's pay rule once. Every time a ticket closes, their earnings are logged line by line, and the stylist sees the same lines on their own screen.

Which pay models are supported?

  • Commission: the stylist earns a share of the services they do. You can set different rates for different service categories, such as cuts and colour.
  • Wage plus bonus: a fixed monthly wage, with a bonus on takings above a monthly target. If you like, you can add a small share of every service on top of the wage.
  • Chair rent: the stylist rents the chair. Rent can be a fixed monthly amount, a share of their takings, or both. The takings belong to the stylist and the rent is deducted from them.

With any model you can also set retail commission, how much of each tip the stylist keeps, and who pays the card fee: the salon, the stylist or half each. You also choose the base: price excluding VAT, price after product costs, or price including VAT. Not sure which model fits? Read our guide on chair rent vs commission.

How the figures build up

  1. Set the rule

On the staff profile's commission tab, choose the pay model and rates. A worked example shows what the rule means in numbers.

  2. Tickets close

Each line is tied to the person who did it, so earnings hit their ledger the moment the ticket closes.

  3. Advances and corrections

Advances come out of the till and off what they're owed. Manual corrections need a reason.

  4. Period sign-off

At the end of a daily, weekly or monthly period the owner approves it. That's when any wage, bonus above target and chair rent are added.

Nothing is ever deleted. If a ticket is cancelled or reopened, a reversing entry is added automatically; a wrong entry gets a correction with a reason. When a rule changes, the new version applies from a start date you choose and never to periods already approved, so last month's figures don't shift.

The Now tab: who do I owe what today?

The first tab on the commission screen is the live view: what each stylist has earned today, anything carried over, and what's still to pay. When you hand over their money in the evening you tap "Settle up", or "Settle all" to do everyone at once. A payout record and a locked expense entry are created automatically, so the till and the commission figures always agree.

Periods are daily by default, which keeps the sums small and easy to check if your team is paid each evening. You can switch to weekly or monthly, and have finished daily periods approved automatically.

Stylists see their own earnings, and can confirm or query them

When a stylist logs in, "My earnings" shows what they've made today, their total balance and a line-by-line breakdown, updating by itself. When the salon approves a period or settles up, the stylist can confirm it or add a note to query it. A query doesn't change the figures; the owner adds a correction if one is needed. Stylists never see each other's earnings or the salon's till. More on roles: Staff roles and logins.

Pay summaries and records

Print a period summary for each stylist: services, earnings, deductions, paid and outstanding. Stylists can print their own too. To see the thinking behind the numbers with worked examples, read how to calculate staff commission.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I don't set a rule?

Lines still count towards takings, but no commission is earned; tips go to the stylist. When you set a rule later, it applies from its start date.

Can the card processing fee come out of the stylist's share?

Yes. Enter your card fee rate and choose who pays it: the salon, the stylist or half each.

If I change a rate mid-month, do earlier days change?

No. The new rule applies from the date you choose and can't be applied back to periods that are already approved.

What if a stylist queries their pay?

Their note is shown to the owner and the records stay as they are. If there's a mistake, the owner adds a correction with a reason, and it shows up in the next settlement.

Are advances taken off automatically?

Yes. An advance is recorded as cash out of the till and deducted from what the stylist is owed. If it's more than they've earned, their balance goes negative.
